When Doctors Keep Saying 'Everything Is Normal'
What to do when your labs come back fine but you still feel terrible β and how to keep advocating.

"Your labs look fine." But you don't feel fine.
This is one of the most common things women tell me. And it's one of the most frustrating experiences in healthcare.
Here's the truth: normal labs and feeling well are not the same thing.
Why this happens
Lab reference ranges are built from large population datasets. They're designed to catch clear abnormalities β not to identify where *you* feel your best. A woman who feels amazing at a TSH of 1.2 might feel exhausted at 2.9, even though both are technically "normal."
Additionally, not all relevant labs are routinely ordered. If you've only ever had a basic metabolic panel and a CBC, there may be pieces of your health picture that simply haven't been looked at.
What to do when you're dismissed
1. Ask for your actual numbers.
Don't accept "it's normal." Ask for the specific value and the reference range. Where are you within that range?
2. Ask what hasn't been tested.
"Given my symptoms, is there anything else we should be looking at?" This opens the door without putting them on the defensive.
3. Track your symptoms in writing.
The more specific your documentation, the harder it is to dismiss. Dates, patterns, severity on a 1β10 scale, triggers, what helps β all of it.
4. Ask for a specialist referral.
Your primary care provider isn't always the right person to figure out a complex issue. An endocrinologist, gynecologist, rheumatologist, or functional medicine practitioner might see things differently.
5. Get a second opinion.
This is always, always an option. A different set of eyes can change everything.
